1. Add a "non-free" component to /etc/apt/sources.list, for example:

2. Update the list of available packages. Install the module-assistant and wireless-tools packages:
# aptitude update
# aptitude install module-assistant wireless-tools

3. Build and install a broadcom-sta-modules-* package for your system, using Module-Assistant:
# m-a a-i broadcom-sta

4. Blacklist the brcm80211 module, to prevent it conflicting for support of BCM4313, BCM43224 and BCM43225 devices:
# echo blacklist brcm80211 >> /etc/modprobe.d/broadcom-sta-common.conf

5. Rebuild your initial ramdisk, to blacklist modules defined at /etc/modprobe.d/broadcom-sta-common.conf within initramfs:
# update-initramfs -u -k $(uname -r)

6. Unload conflicting modules:
# modprobe -r b44 b43 b43legacy ssb brcm80211

7. Load the wl module:
# modprobe wl

8. Verify your device has an available interface:
# iwconfig

9. Configure your wireless interface as appropriate.

If you are using a generic synaptic touchpad, but it fails to respond to tapping or scrolling actions under a new installation of Squeeze (as in testing), you can run the following two commands to immediately make it work:
modprobe -r psmouse
modprobe psmouse proto=imps

To make this change permanent, create a file such as touchpad.conf under /etc/modprobe.d/, and put the following line in it:
options psmouse proto=imps

You do not need to install gsynptics, synaptic, tpconfig or edit xorg.conf. All you need is passing the kernel options for module psmouse.

- No DNS autoupdate: using DNS from Google for accessing Fb in VN
In /etc/dhcp/dhclient.conf (not /etc/dhcp3/)

Địa chỉ email đầu tiên được lập vào 8/3/2000, cách đây đúng 9 năm. Đó là một địa chỉ Yahoo và được người khác lập giúp. Lúc đó quý email như là quý thư tay, và những email quan trọng cũng thường được in ra. Cuối thư, dòng chữ "Do You Yahoo!?" cũng tạo cảm giác huyền bí lắm. Yahoo lúc đó cho 3 MB dung lượng, so với Hotmail lúc đó chỉ cho 2 MB. Sau đó Yahoo tăng lên 6 MB, rồi lại giảm còn 4 MB cho những email mới đăng kí. Sau khi Gmail xuất hiện với dung lượng lúc đầu đến 1 GB, Yahoo cho tăng lên 100 MB, rồi 1 GB, rồi vô hạn như hiện nay.

こんにちは、山内あゆです！
小倉弘子キャスター産休にあたり、ピンチヒッターとしてニュースを担当することになり、はや２ヶ月・・・。
小倉さんは無事ママになり、私は少しニュースの空気に慣れ、東京の桜も咲きました。

　相変わらず各方面にご心配・ご迷惑をおかけしながらの放送ですが、春ですし、明るい気持ちでお仕事しよう！と思っている今日この頃です。

　さて、小倉さんにも家族が増えたということで、私も今日は家族の話をしようと思います。ターゲットは、父です。

　私の父はベトナム人です。母は日本人なので、私はいわゆる「ハーフ」ということになります。しかし、同じアジア人ゆえ顔つきはとってもジャパニーズ。苗字も名前も日本名なので、滝川クリステルさんや葉山エレーヌさんのようにパッとわかるはずもありません。お二人にならって改名すると・・・山内タイフォンです。なにかアイドル性にかけるような・・・。

　父は１９歳の頃、ベトナムからの国費留学生として来日し、日本の大学に進みました。卒業後は帰国し、戦争で疲弊しきった祖国をよくしようという大志を抱いて、本当によく勉強したそうです。当時女子大生だった母とはダンスパーティで知り合い、大学院の時に結婚。まだベトナムは戦争中だったため、ふたりは帰国を断念し日本で新婚生活を始めました。それでも、祖国に平和が訪れたらすぐに帰国するつもりで、母はベトナム語を学び、サイゴンの気候にあった夏服をダンボールにまとめ、いつでも運び出せるようにしていました。

　そして１９７５年、ついにベトナム戦争は終結します。明くる年生まれる私を連れ、家族５人でベトナムへ帰国します、と父はサイゴンの祖父へ連絡しました。しかし、祖父は反対したのです。今はまだ戻るな、と。ベトナムは貧しく混乱した状態であり、日本で暮らすほうが家族が豊かに暮らせると。

　翌年生まれた私に、父はベトナム国籍を選びました。私は「あゆちゃん」と日本名で呼ばれていましたが、それは通称であり、戸籍にはベトナムの名のみが記されていました。それこそがタイフォンちゃんです。朝の食卓では父によるベトナム語ミニ講座が開かれていました。

　時は流れ、私は二重国籍を申請し、ベトナム行きのダンボールは片付けられ、ベトナム語講座もいつしか開かれなくなりました。それでもベトナムは豊かにはならず、父は日本の永住権を取りました。

　いつ、どんな話し合いがあってベトナムに戻らないことになったのか、私にはわかりません。でも、時々考えることがあります。あったかもしれない、ベトナムでのもうひとつの私の人生。白いアオザイで通学していたのかしら？　日本語は忘れてしまっていたかしら？　それとも母の国に憧れて、日本へ行きたいと願っていたかしら？　そして父にはどんな人生があったのかしら、と。

　いまでは日本のジョークもわかるようになった父は１９歳の想いをいくらか実らせ、日本とベトナムを往復しながら医療や公害問題の共同研究をしています。そんな父のささやかな夢は、ホーチミンに小さな家を持つことです。祖父も叔父も亡くなり、父には帰るべき家がなくなってしまいました。川には巨大な食べられるエビがいて、庭にはマンゴスチンやパパイヤがたわわになる家。まだ建ててもいないその家の話をして、「あゆも自由に使っていいぞ！」という父は、なかなかいいと思います。

Last night coffee late; late sleep. Opened a hairdressing shop by renting the opposite house. It was a friend's house; he was specialized in drawing, painting. Your studio pix, seemed taken last year, appeared on shop signs and also used for illustrating steps of hairdressing in the shop, including one with uncovered front chest ;-). The friend said that he didn't know well about you, but the pix was sent by you as his group asked for pix over internet; and you knew the pix would be used for my hairdessing shop - that actually made you were willing to allow them to use your pix, but you didn't tell me anything about this before. Felt moved by your willing. However, i and my friend thought that the uncovered pix was not appropriately used. Woke up.

Recalled the time we went more than 66 km by separate 'honda om'. On the way I was always afraid that you would be taken to other place for bad behaviour.

Installing Debian on Acer TravelMate 3010-3012WTMi

- Install Partition Magic 8.0 on C:, resize C:, create D: (hd(0,4),vfat32), create swap partition (hd(0,5), 512 MB), create ext3 partition (hd(0,6).

- Make a grub loader by using Puppy Linux program at http://puppyfiles.org/dotpupsde/files/setup-puppy2installer-XP.exe (option 3 in that program). Now it can boot into grub command line (at grub, we can use, for example, configfile (hd0,4)/boot/menu.lst to enter graphic interface). I did it by chance. It may be better to use a more simple way to install grub on a windows partition.

- From http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/, download debian image netinst and files initrd.gz and vmlinuz in hd-media directory of other images. Save in D:\soft.

- Boot to grub, run
kernel (hd0,4)/soft/vmlinuz
initrd (hd0,4)/soft/initrd.gz
and boot.

- The installer will automatically find the cd image and do the installation.

- To use ethernet device, add to /etc/network/interfaces (if the installer didn't do this)
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp

- To use wireless device (see update below for kernel >=2.6.24), apt-get install ipw3945-modules-`uname -r` ipw3945d firmware-ipw3945, run iwconfig to check the name of the device (for example, eth1). If all are ok, run these command (or create a script for this):
ifconfig eth1 up
iwconfig eth1 mode Managed
iwconfig eth1 key key-of-the-net
iwconfig eth1 essid "Wireless-nm"
dhclient eth1

May need to disable eth0 (in /etc/network/interfaces) to use eth1.

If the wireless hardware is inactivated with dmesg saying that
ipw3945: Radio Frequency Kill Switch is On:
Kill switch must be turned off for wireless networking to work. (See http://ipw3945.sourceforge.net/README.ipw3945)

activate the hardware by pressing the wireless button (near the headphone jack phone) (or booting into Windows ;-) ).

- Install 915resolution (to setting the screen resolution to 1280x800). UPDATE: 915resolution package has been obsoleted since my dist-upgrade on Feb 2009; to use that screen resolution, change the driver of "Generic Video Card" from "vesa" to "intel".

- Install alsa sound driver: alasa-base, alsa-oss, alsa-utils, alsamixergui. Run alsaconf.

- Linux may recognize the bios timezone is UTC, and then change the clock to ICT (Indochina timezone). tzconfig is now obsolete, use dpkg-reconfigure tzdata (or run ln -sf /usr/share/zoneinfo/Asia/Saigon /etc/localtime. Check the option "UTC=no" in /etc/default/rcS. Run hwclock --hctosys --localtime; if the error "select() to /dev/rtc to wait for clock tick timed out" exists, append --directisa to it (if then this command work fine, open /etc/init.d/hwclock.sh, change the line HWCLOCKPARS= to HWCLOCKPARS="--directisa"). /etc/adjtime records the last time hwclock is used to set the clock.

- Check battery status: cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT1/state. A code for battery monitoring: http://swicked.net/code/bat_mon.sh.

- Install Japanese font: apt-get install ttf-kochi-mincho.

Update 18 Jan 2009: just upgraded the system to kernel 2.6.26

- Wireless: iwl-wifi drivers, built in the kernel, are used to replace the older ipw3945. Just need to install firmware-iwlwifi (see http://wiki.debian.org/iwlwifi)

- Huawei EG162G EDGE/GPRS USB stick (used with Mobifone): install wvdial package; then run wvdialconf and in /etc/wvdial.conf, add

Username = mms
Password = mms
Phone = *99#

Run wvdial to start the modem.

Update 8 Nov 2009: Synaptics mouse tapping stopped working after upgrade. It was explained that the upstream synaptics driver now defaults to tapping off.
In /etc/X11/xorrg.conf,

- Install mplayer: see http://wiki.debian.org/MPlayer
Codecs can also be copied (or untar from essential-20071007.tar.bz2) to /usr/lib/codecs/mplayer_binary_codecs/essential-20071007 and make a symlink /usr/lib/codecs/essential-20071007 to the above directory. According to the info provided, the package libstdc++5 is also needed (apt-get install libstdc++5).

- To connect wifi through WPA:

phpBB hacking

Just done some hacks on a phpBB2 forum, including integrating javascript Vietnamese keyboard with user's option on input type, correcting back user-id in database (hugely increased, and lost user-id=1), bringing search box to front page and nearly every page, making it more bilingual, focusing pointer in search and login input, showing latest active threads in index, adding an rss/atom, etc.

Feel satisfied with the results. However, a later upgrade of phpBB may become a challenge.

第24回日本平まつりー大花火大会

場所：静岡市清水区・日本平ホテル野外庭園, 7月27日(水) 19:30〜20:30, 打上数: 1万発, 2004年の人出: 3万5000人 (including me!).

Update: ふくろい遠州の花火, 袋井市原野谷川親水公園, 8月6日（土）. 県内最大の花火大会 and one of the biggest 花火大会 in Japan, with two sessions 16:00〜19:00(昼花火) and 19:00〜21:00(夜花火). 打ち上げ数: 3万発, 2004年の人出: 35万人. The second time I've been in Fukuroi - used to be there for a football match, when just coming to Japan.

Just been there for a scientific meeting.

Flight itinenary: Left Narita (CX) at 17:00 June 10, reached Hong Kong at 20:45, left for Heathrow at 23:55 and reached there at 05:45+1. Nearly late for the flight to Helsinki-Vantaa (AY) at 07:30 because of not noticing London is GMT+1 at this season. Reached Helsinki at 12:25. On the way back on June 16, left Helsinki-Vantaa at 16:00, reached Heathrow at 17:10, left for Hong Kong at 18:15 and reached there at 13:20+1, left for Narita at 15:05 and reached Japan at 20:20, then used 21:14 JR Narita Rapid to Tokyo, Tokaido Line to Atami at 0:42, Moonlight Nagara 1:14 to Shizuoka 2:26, and caught 5:06 train to Kusanagi.
